Spray Day!
Hi!
Thank you for all the emails and comments I have received; I am very happy to know that the topics of the blog are well liked and that you are interested in knowing more .
This weeks topic is the introduction of the spray; I will be introducing you to Hakasan and you will see Holandesa again.
Being conscious of our behavior is one of the first steps we must take in order to be effective and safe when handling and dealing with such sensitive animals as horses. Even though we have the best intention we often forget we are dealing with prey animals.
Humans wrongly think that the only perception of the world is theirs; we do not understand that something that appears to be harmless to us can cause utmost fear to a horse. We must remember that horses senses are much more developed than those of humans and that by nature horses will tend to flee from anything unknown.
The first spray application, no matter the horses age, can be a very stressful experience to the horse. There are stimulus that we must introduce correctly; sound, odor and when the liquid touches their skin.
I am going to show two videos that summarize the spray application.
When first introducing the spray bottle to our horses we use water during the training sessions. Once the yearling has accepted the spray sound and the water we then switch to the fly spray.
Hakasan is a very interesting yearling, he already shows dominance in the herd, because of this we must work early on in establishing space limits with him.
Same process with Holandesa!
